The German Conference on Bioinformatics is an international conference within the tradition of the German Workshop Computers in Bioscience created nearly 20 years ago.

The GCB 2003 conference continues the long tradition of a national bioinformatics conference where German and international bioinformatics meet. After Martinsried in 1991 and Kloster Irsee in 1997, the GCB visits for the 3rd time the Munich area and will enjoy again the white-blue charm of Upper Bavaria.

The Munich region has gained a strong momentum in bioinformatics recently as much as other established and emerging centers in Germany. The DFG funded BIM (Bioinformatics Initiative Munich) curriculum is now in its 3rd year and more than 200 students are enrolled. BFAM (Bioinformatics for the Analysis of Mammalian Genomes), funded by the BMBF joins groups from 3 universities, the GSF Research Center as well as three bioinformatics companies. A lively bioinformatics scene is emerging. A special session will report on the activities of the German Bioinformatics Centers.

Participants at the recent GCB/ECCB conferences have commented on the need of fostering the biological perspective of bioinformatics. Therefore, we like to emphasize this theme for the 2003 GCB without excluding the computational aspects; however, such emphasis depends much on the submissions.

The conference will take place from October 12th through 14th. The meeting will start on the first day with tutorials (Genome Annotation (MIPS-Group), Structure Prediction, Promoter Prediction (T. Werner), Teaching and Metabolomics and the Society Sessions (GBM, DECHEMA, GI, etc.). On Monday and Tuesday we will have the invited talks and accepted paper presentations. A special afternoon session is reserved for the presentation of the German Bioinformatics Centers (Berlin, Bielefeld, Braunschweig, Jena, Gatersleben, Köln, Saarbrücken, Tübingen, Leipzig, München). Gatersleben, Köln, Saarbrücken, Tübingen, Leipzig, München). Gatersleben, Köln, Saarbrücken, Tübingen, Leipzig, München). Gatersleben, Köln, Saarbrücken, Tübingen, Leipzig, München).

We would like to offer about 30 travel grants for students.

Accepted papers can be forwarded to the refereeing process of Bioinformatics.

The topics list is a general collection of subjects, without being exclusive:

GCB '03 will feature invited talks, oral paper presentation, a poster exhibition and commercial exhibitions.
