Genome Annotation

Annotation of proteins on whole genome as well as on partial sequence or EST data is a major challenge. Starting from gene modelling, the annotation focuses on structural and functional classifications. Different catalogues or ontologies are applied to describe pathways and functional units. The growing number of different sequenced species requires detailed annotation to enable comparative genomics.

Structural Genomics

The tutorial is organized as follows:

Helmholtz Network for Bioinformatics

This tutorial presents the concept and web page of the Helmholtz Network for Bioinformatics. It consists of a more theoretical introduction, practical demonstrations and exercises.

Promoter Analysis

The tutorial is meant for scientists with a background in either molecular biology or bioinformatics and will focus on the biological principles and the consequences resulting for computational analysis of regulatory sequences. Some basic knowledge about transcription control would be an advantage. The tutorial covers the principles of transcription control with a special focus on promoters and their analysis. Concepts of physical versus functional transcription factor binding sites, transcriptional modules and physical as well as functional promoters will be explained and illustrated with many examples. All of this will be explained on the background of static versus dynamic aspects of transcription control. The background of some common problems experienced in promoter sequence analysis will be elucidated and a complete sample strategy how to detect target genes will be presented at an example involving the PAX8 transcription factor.

Teaching

This will be an informal Working Group Meeting of scientists engaged in Bioinformatics education. Guests are welcome. We shall review the status of curricular developments at various academic sites, and discuss aspects like compatability across curricula and the new adventure of Akkreditierung.
